Things you miss from the past

Hi all.
So is there anything from the past that you miss today?
I am only 23 and i will be 24 in November so probaply there isn't a lot of past to think about however even in the few years of my life there are some little things that i miss.
First of all i miss the vinal records. Now we have got cds or mp3s with much better quality without any background noice but i really miss the sound of the vinal and the unique sound. Now we don't get this any more apart from people who are lucky to collect them. Also i know djs use them but apart from that they are not available these days.
Also when i was a kit i remember in Cyprus some people who used to sell different things mainly fruit and vegetable and they used to come with their vans and they had a microphone and speaker on them and they used to say: "I am selling top quality potatos and things like that" lol. They don't seam to come these days. I don't know if in other countries you used to have people like that.
These are the things i can think at the moment. If i think about anything else i will post it here.
So what about you?
Nikos

hmm. I miss the days of the summers when i was a young lad. I'd just run around and act goofy. lol I also rode my bike all over the neighborhood, including through my neighbor's prised yukka plants. ahh. those were the good old days.

Greetings Nikos,

I also miss the old summer days of hanging with friends and just acting like a kid. I also missing watching cartoons on Saturday morning, good tv, etc.

Very interesting replies.
I miss the old tv programmes for kits too. Now they don't sound as good.

Post 6 by guitargod1 (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Saturday, 16-Sep-2006 22:50:40

I miss records as well!
When I used to live with my grandparents, when I was quite young, they had a milk man who came once or twice a week. We also went to Friday dinner at the American Legion which was always good, the fried clams were my favorite. Also, people pumping gas and bagging groceries, those things were nice.

Post 7 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 8:19:28

Hmm safety it's dangerous around here. Deep, deep, snow. In my childhood it always snowed heavily and the winters were vicious. The expectation and surprise of crimbo. Flying down the motorway to Wales on holiday and being escorted by a crowd of 20 bikers, I'd give anything to re-live that day.

Post 8 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 9:57:07

I miss the Saturday-morning cartoons and the other cartoons that used to come out when I was younger. To me, it seems that a lot of cartoons and many movies nowadays try to simulate the language and sometimes the happenings of today, as if the makers no longer have an immagination or something. If I wanted to hear kids use current slang and current style of speaking, I can go outside and listen to the neighborhood kids and so don't see any point of hearing it in a cartoon. I also think that most movies and cartoons don't teach anything, even those made for children, and if they do, most children won't even catch the moral of that story anyway because they just see the action and not the story. I learned this with my nephews, when we watched Lady and the Tramp. (OK, well that movie was even before my time, but) anyway, although the cartoon clearly showed different things you could get out of it, my nephews didn't watched it all the way thru but didn't see anything in it because it didn't have the fast-paced action, and it was just way different from the cartoons they show nowadays. I think that's kind of how a lot of the children's cartoons of the 80's and early 90's would be compared to the ones now. But yeah, that would be the main thing I would miss and that I wish could be brought back.

Post 9 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 9:58:39

I mean they, did, watch it all the way thru. Sorry. *smile*

Post 10 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 10:08:35

I also miss these books that featured characters called the Alphabet Pals. They came in a laminated cardboard box and had a set of tapes, accompanying laminated cardboard books and a picture book made of the same thing, a sticker book, and a puppet of Amy the Rabbit and Zack the Monkey. (Those were the main characters I think and of course, they had the 26 other friends that appeared in the stories.) Another thing I miss is the Nentendo and Atari and their game cartridges. *smile* I can probably think of more things I miss but I'll leave it at that for now. *smile*

like the music man, i miss riding a bike, and agree with tinkerbell, i miss the good saturday morning cartoons, plus playing them there good video games

Post 12 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 10:52:56

Yes i agree. These days things for kits don't teach anything they only have these fights.
Also the old cartoons used to have good music and songs in them like the characters would speak to each other with singing. They used to be more creative.

Post 13 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 12:04:30

What an interesting topic. I wouldn't think most of you had lived long enough to have a past--much less remember it. Yet you are coming up with some real gems.

I have several to remember (I love naustalgia). Maybe a few of them will ring a bell.

Remember I go back further than many of your parents.

Movie matinees for 50 cents, double features AND cartoons before the movie?

Playing “fort,” kick the can and tag? Or just rolling down a hill?

Clipping playing cards to my bicycle spokes with a clothes pin?

Go-go boots and granny glasses?

Pixie sticks, wax lips and candy necklaces?

Waiting for the TV to warm up? Oh yes, and having to walk across the room to
change channels because there were no remote controls.

The smells of school — chalk, newsprint and paste?

Officially “breaking in” a new textbook or a new student?

Walking everywhere — church, school, the Five & Dime?

Fifty cent allowances?

Watching “Roy Rogers” and “Fury” on Saturday morning tv?

Reading the “Bazooka Joe” comic strip wrapper for Bazooka bubblegum?

Collecting baseball cards, and loving that horible bubblegum that came with them. I actually had a ventage Stan Musiel card which I immediately Brailled so I could identify it. Collectors would love that.

The joy of lacing up new white Keds tennis shoes?

Reading “MAD” magazine? Do they still publish that?

Sitting down with the whole family to watch “Ed Sullivan” on Sunday night?

What a big deal it was to get my very own transistor radio?

Roller skates I clamped onto my shoes with a skate key?

Record players that only played 45rpm records

The malt shop, that was the place to be. It was actually the pharmacy, but we knew it as the place to go for fountain drinks and the best juke box in town.
In fact, if you were lucky, you could hear the latest Elvis Presley or Everly
 Brothers record before anyone else.

Carving things out of Ivory Soap (it floats!)?

Fizzies? wax teeth or lips that had a delicious flavored drink in them?

Hershey Bars with foil wrappers?

"fast food" that was cooked while you waited, and a burger, fries and a drink
 for fifty cents.

My sister playing with jacks and pick-up sticks? or paper dolls
Now, that was fun. Thanks Nikos for starting this.

Bob?

Post 14 by Bryan (This site is so "educational") on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 12:10:09

well blbobby
i am, um, let me think, o ya i am going to be 38 soon, *grin, smiles, but i am still a kid at heart, hehehehehe

Post 15 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 12:12:29

No problem Bob. I am glad you liked this topick and thanks for the reply it was very interesting.
I also miss the old phones with the sircul thing with the 10 holes you had to tern to dial each number. I don't know what they are called. You had to go anti clock wise. One was on the right, two was the next one on the left etc. In Cyprus some people still have them like my mam's sister but not a lot of people these days.

Post 16 by Puggle (I love my life!) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 13:39:54

I miss sliding down the steps in our 2 story house in either old card board boxes, or in a sleeping bag. I miss tying my brothers up with dads socks. I miss swimming off the warf at christmas. I miss going out for adventures in our neighbours tinny boat, and going nowhere but rund and round the bay where we lived saturday morning cartoons. loads of things. oh yeah, being young enough to run around without a shirt cause there was nothing to hide back then. You boys have it way to sweet I tell ya *grin*

Post 17 by Grace (I've now got the ggold prolific poster award! wahoo! well done to me!) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 15:19:34

...a rotary phone perhaps, Nikos...??

Post 18 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 15:41:43

Thanks Connie.
Yes this is what i ment a rotary phone. I was speaking to Bob before and i described the phone and he told me the same word. Thanks to both of you.

Post 19 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 17:21:29

Oh yeah. I actually think rotary phones were fun to use. We had one at one point for a short time that I think had belonged to my grandma, but I liked hearing the sound it makes each time you turn the dial. And I'm assuming that place Grace mentioned must sell them? I'd want one. *smile*

Post 20 by redgirl34 (Scottish) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 17:42:10

I remember those phones, it was kind of fun turning the diles. Now the phones we have are push buttons and you can carry them arround like a mobile phone. The disadvantage about that is they get lost. My sister is for ever loosing the phone. I remember one time I found the phone in the fridge.

Post 21 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 17:47:53

Also something good from the past is music boxes.
I think our kits are going to miss out without them unless if they are still available but i didn't see one for long time.

Post 22 by jmbauer (Technology's great until it stops working.) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 19:22:59

The social aspects of high school and earlier, the slats which used to support my bed—'twas really a nightmare the first time that thing broke—, bunk beds, records—I could still get my hands on them if I so chose—, band, and, as Puggle said, sliding down two flights of stairs on or in various household items. Once, my box took a bad angle off of a couch leg, spilling me down the stairs in a tangle of flailing limbs. That one hurt! lol

Post 23 by Nage (Your father's friend's daughter's roommate's niece) on Sunday, 17-Sep-2006 20:27:49

Oh! I love this topic, thanks, nicos. The slew of memories is unbelievable.... I miss old cartoons, captain Planet, and sailor moon, Nickelodion in the afternoons, with Stickley! Lol, I know as a 16 year old, there's not much changed, but stilll....
I miss the old disney movies, with the exception of a rare few, disney used to be a lot better, back in the day of Little Mirmaid, Lionking, and so on...
I also miss mom, when she used to go to MDCC, and take me with her, sometimes she'd have nice professors, and I'd be able to go to class with her... other times I stayed with a few friends of hers, and they'd buy me happy meals and run me up and down the hallways, I was a terror in those days.
I guess most of all I miss being in venezuela, though the memories are far and few. I miss living with all my family, in a day where, though still a third world country, it wasn't as degenerate as it is today... And, finally, I miss the inosence with which I could view the world...

I still love riding my bike through water holes, shooting hogs and cats with my BB gun, and sledding in the winter.

Yeah, I miss the Wide-awake shows on Saturdays, Spot the dog, The Waltons which mum and I used to watch at Christmas time, (97 days, 7 hours 45 minutes till Christmas BTW) going to visit friends round their houses and playing with all their toys which were loads better than mine, I miss the rides to school and gym club in Mum's friend Angela's car, a Ford Siera which was a cross between Gran's old Fiesta and an escort and I'd pinch one of her two girls, child seats for the ride and I miss their two dogs, Kimmy and Tippany, probably both deceased now. I miss going to nursery school with Sue, my best friend at the time and also a classroom assistant and childminder, so she could look after me if Gran couldn't have me after Nursery or if mum was running late at work. She'd take me down the shops to buy cakes and things to share with the rest of the class, we'd go for walks down by the river Thames as we lived quite close to the west end of London in those days, I miss my swings in my grandparents, huge back garde in the house they lived in, I just miss everything pre-school really, I miss the times when I had friends living locally, when I could go out either with them or on my own, cycling up and down the road on my first bike with stabilizers and one of my favourite dolls strapped in the dolls, seat on the back. Those were the good times.

well, certainly not "things" as it is, I miss ~ ~ and could I add rather "persons" instead.. for as older we become I miss...my folks.. the "things" just came along with them..... "In loving Memory."

Grace has made me think again.

People and animals I miss from my past.

Both my parents, who struggled while I complained.

My grandparents who taught me the true meaning of selfless love.

My Great Grandmother (born in 1863) who used to tell me true stories of the American Indians of her youth.

And my first puppy that I accidentally killed by my negligence, "I'm sorry, but, at least, I remember you Dusty".

Hi all.
I went back to university this week and for a few days i didn't have internet and i was glad to see many new replies since i checked a few days ago.
Very interesting.
I miss some people as well. My grand father who was my dad's dad who was Nikos as well and my grand mother my mam's mam. The other two are still alive fortunately.
I also miss my first school the school for the blind in Cyprus.

Post 35 by Blue Velvet (I've got the platinum golden silver bronze poster award.) on Friday, 29-Sep-2006 13:18:06

I miss the friends I made in elementary school. I wish I had kept in contact with them after transferring to a public school. I did stay in touch through high school but not after that, and I often think about them and wonder how their lives are going.

I also miss just being a kid and not worrying about serious matters.

Post 36 by Raskolnikov (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Friday, 20-Oct-2006 10:29:21

Going to the local park with a big clean empty trash can to fill it up with water because there was no running water in my house. We'd walk back rolling the can on a grocery cart with the can full to the rim. We'd use this water to make food, take baths, wash our face and mouths, and flush the toilet. We'd heat the water up outside on a barbecue grill because there was no gas.

We didn't have a television but, boy, could we tell jokes! We played so much outside until it started getting dark. All of our bed posts had burning candles because the light was disconnected. We'd use the melted wax like crayons and write or draw on the mirrors.

We used to play with our neighbor's dog because we couldn't afford to have our own puppy; we could bearly keep ourselves fed.

Some days when dad used to pick us up at school, we'd carry chairs, home that were left out for the garbage truck to pick up. We'd carry off old bikes and try to fix 'em up but never could. We once took a big mirror that was broken at one corner, and my mom still has it.

We once built a humungous skateboard out of a stolen piece of wood taken from a construction site and screwing wheels onto it that were taken off of about two grocery carts. We placed it at the top of a hill by our house and rolled down, about thirteen of us neighborhood trouble-makers. That damned thing couldn't roll in a straight line.

We used to steal all sorts of candy from the nearby liquor store. I got caught only once. My brother was the expert; he wore sweat pants with elastic on the ends of the legs and would just drop the candy into his waist as if it were a big pocket. He was never caught.

Yup, those were the good old days...when I was poor but didn't know it. Now everyone is gone and grown up. These memories help me laugh at what was in reality a horrible period in my family's life. But in many ways, I cherish these memories because they are what made my family a loving family.

Very interesting replies. Especially post 36.
By reading post 36 makes me think how lucky we are these days with plenty of food and other things. I think we should be greatful of what we have but i also agree that people in the past they were much happier even if they had much less than we have today.

Post 39 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Saturday, 21-Oct-2006 8:02:47

Post 36 is very interesting.

It got me to thinking, and I guess we were pretty poor too. I think at one point in my early life (3 or 4 years old) we didn't have electricity. I know we did have an outhouse that my daddy laid a board sidewalk to so I could find it.

But, I never really thought of us as being poor as we lived in a farming community where the people around us were also struggling. Ah for the innocence of childhood.

Wow what a great topic!
Of course I miss the days of TGIF, where the whole family would gather around the TV with big bowls of popcorn for each person. Sometimes if we were lucky, we would get a big bowl of ice cream.
The many warm sunny days in California, running bare-footed with friends, the red wagon my friends and I would take turns rolling down our steep hill in between my neighbors and my house.
The warm home made cookies Mom would make us kids on a cold winter's day,
the complete meals including breakfast.
My beloved dog Kirby who took a beating, and finally we had to give him up because he was taught to bite.
I miss being me.

Post 41 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Sunday, 22-Oct-2006 21:10:40

Faith, I gotta ask, (and I'm not being synical just curious) when you said "I miss being me." Who are you now?

On with the wonderful topic.

Has anyone ever had home made ice cream, made with an ice cream freezer that you turn until your arm feels like it's about to come off?

We used to have church socials in my small home town, where everyone would bring freezers ready to turn. There were all sorts of flavors (even water melon, which I hated). My favorite was homemade chocolate: oh my God, a taste to die for.

When i had said "I miss being me," I meant to say "I miss my old self. Not having to worry about the cares in the world. Not having to see all of my friends growing up and moving away. I miss being my yunger self."

I love home made ice cream! Every time I would visit my grandparents in Idaho during the hottest time of the summer, we would make ice cream sometimes by hand.

I miss being a kid and wrestling and hanging out with my friends. I also have so many tv shows from the 70's that can not compare to todays shows. I also have such fond memories of playing with blocks and matchbox cars creating my own stories. those old toys were so much fun like the slinky, pogo stick, hoppity-hop, the spinning boards, superballs and so much more.
